Edwin Manners's Story

Royal Naval Voluntary Reserve - Benbow Battalion - London Division.
Doctor and Eye Surgeon at the London hospital and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons
Aged 36.
Junior Officer in the R.N.V.R. and sent as part of the force from Harwich in late September/early October 1914 by the First Lord of the Admiralty ( Winston Churchill) to defend Antwerp and deflect German forces from the front facing the BEF.
Killed by a sniper on October 8th 1914.
Originally thought to be buried in a mass grave under a memorial in Niewport, Belgium but his remains were found in 1985 and are now buried with a headstone in an Antwerp cemetery.
Very few of the original R.N.V.R. returned and Antwerp fell later in October 1914.
What a waste of a life with so much to give.
