Frederick's Story
Unfortunately I never knew my great uncle but his brother has said that Fred "was a character, one of the boys bringing home all the popular songs". Fred joined the Territorials in 1913 as a part-time soldier and when War broke out he volunteered for service overseas and was promoted to Lance Corporal in 1915. Fred died on 16th September 1916 aged 21 during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Combles Communal Cemetery Extension. He was posthumously awarded 3 medals, the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal (Pip, Squeak and Wilfred).
