Charles's Story
His memoirs are too long to include here, suffice to say - he set sail from Devonport on April 10th 1915 for the little recorded East Africa campaign, one of 1200 men. He survived to return, with thankfully only malaria to show for it, one of only a hundred or so. "Summing up East Africa was a very, very tough campaign, the fighting always fierce and at close quarters, but the worst enemy was Malaria and Dysentery. " This doesn't begin to describe the difficult terrain they had to cross, on foot, the lack of food, the lack of suitable clothing & equipment, the loss of men, including their officers. Such was the conflict that several honours were awarded, including a posthumous V.C. for a Lt. Driscoll.
On return to the UK, he was invalided to recover from bouts of malaria & was about to be commissioned into the Royal Flying Corp when the war ended.
