William's Story

My dear grandfather or grampa as I affectionately called him joined the Royal Garrison Artillery (now The Royal Artillery) at the age of 31 leaving a wife and 3 children to do so. He lived in Congresbury, Somerset, for most of the last years of his life.

Service Medals: BWM & Victory Medal Gallantry Medals: M S M & DCM

He served in France for three years from 1916 being awarded The Distingushed Conduct Medal. The London Gazette citation reads: 'For continuous good service and devotion to duty, particularly in the retirement in March 1918, and in the advance in August & September. He displayed marked ability & courage on numerous occasions when the battery was under heavy, hostile fire. At Guillaucourt on March 27th 1918, when the enemy was in close proximity to the battery and rapidly advancing, his energy & resourcefulness were largely instrumental in saving 2 guns'. He remained in France through most of 1919 helping with clearing up duties.
