Grace Edith Alice's Story

Grace was 15 years of age when the war began and joined the VAD

She joined the VAD as a very young recruit serving as a Nursing Orderly in section 82 of the Middlesex area. Her duties were two evenings a week after work and one session at the weekend. She received progressive training in caring for wounded servicemen from Britain and overseas. Patients included men from Canada, Australia and South Africa with whom she corresponded for a considerable time after they returned home. Grace (Ives) married William Rich on May 17th 1926 at St. James Presbyterian Church, Wood Green. They had a daughter and a son, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. They moved to Baldock, Hertfordshire from London in 1945 and the last seven years of their lives were spent in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.
