William's Story

William Abraham was my grandmothers first husband. We think they were married for just 6 months before he left to fight on the front in France, and was sadly killed on Feb 17th 1917. We only discovered this after her death in 1988, which made it clearer to us why she shut this part of her life away for so many years. She must have been absolutely devastated by his death.

We still have the letter that was written by William's Lieutenant to her following his death, it is written in pencil and now very faded but it is so poignant and moving.
