Charles's Story

My uncle Charles Spenser Muench's back had been injured by a swing when a boy. In consequence he had been exempt War service. People didn't know this and started to put white feathers through the letter box - thereby accusing him of cowardice. Charlie felt forced to volunteer and was accepted into the King's Royal Rifle Corps (it was a volunteer Army at this stage). His military number was 16272. He became a corporal. He was killed in action at the Battle of Delville Wood on 13th July 1916, aged 19.

Charlie's War Pension went to his mother who put it all in the attic and never touched it, calling it "Blood Money". He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France on Pier and Face 13A & 13B.

NB. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists him as MINCH, not MUENCH.
