Thomas's Story
My great grandfather was killed at the battle of Neauve Chapelle, France on the 10th March 1915. He was married to Ann Jane Norwood, they had three children when he joined up in Hamilton, their oldest child was my grandmother, she was 10 yrs old when her father died and my great grandmother gave birth to her fourth child 15 days after her husband was killed. My great grandfather was 31yrs old and his widow was 30yrs old.
My great grandfather was born in Bridgeton Glasgow where his father worked in the weaving industry, my great grandfather worked as a tramway labouror before moving to Barrhead in 1912 where he then worked in the Thornlibank printing works he signed up for the army in 1914, went to France in November of that year and was killed on the 10th of march 1915.
