Arthur's Story
Arthur Thomas Saye was always known as Tommy. He was wounded in the leg (on the Wervicq front, Belgium?) when he went back into a trench to retrieve something belonging to an Officer.
Sick, dying in a far off land, No mother by him to take his hand, A loving son closed his eyes
He was taken to a Clearing Hospital at Remy Sidings near Lijssenthoek. He believed he would be going home but, as a Sister-In-Charge wrote to his mother, he never knew the seriousness of his condition. He died of his wounds on 5th October 1918 and is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery near Popringhe, Belgium.
His parents never recovered from losing him and his brother Ernest ('Dod'). For example, on being invited to a Memorial Service at their local parish church when the war ended, their mother Sarah Saye said "I don't need to go to a Church Service to remember my sons" ... and she never did go to one.
