Robert's Story
Great Uncle Robert was a regular soldier having enlisted in 1912, at the start of the Great War, Robert was serving in India in the Royal Field Artillery as a driver. Family legend has it that he was one of the men who sat on one of the team of horses pulling the field gun and limber. He was transferred from India during the early part of the war to the western front in France. He survived the fighting and as a regular soldier, was kept on in France after the war to help clean up the battlefields. He was injured by a horse (family legend says he was kicked) and as a result contracted nephritis and died in a Canadian Army hospital in March 1919. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetary.
