Patrick Joseph's Story

My father was a Company runner and frequently had to climb over bodies of the dead to go from one position to another. On one occassion he trod a man he thought was dead only to hear his groan in agony and say "Oh please don't stand on me mate". He used to weep & say "I'm really sorry mate". He remembered speaking to a sentry outside their battalion HQ early one morning and then heard a salvo incoming and so jumped into a ditch. When he arose the sentry was gone, blown to bits by the shellfire. He suffered nightmares from his experiences until he died age 74.
