Sgt. Ernest Courtney, was my Great Uncle and joined the 2nd Batt. Royal Welch Fusilliers in 1907.
Service No. 9353. He served in India from 1909 until 1914 and was posted to France on 12th August 1914, was wounded by gun shot to the chest on 20 July 1916 and returned to England as a result of this on 24th July that year. He was awarded the Military Medal on 11.10.1916.
How he earned it is not known, the London Gazette just states that it was "Awarded for Bravery in Action".
He returned to France once more on 15th June 1917.
He was killed in action on 26 September that year and is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery.
Ern was the son of John and Elizabeth Courtney of Splott, Cardiff, he was their third son and one of 14 children. He never married.
