My grandad volunteered and joined up in Crownhill, Plymouth. Insisted on the Somersets even though they wanted him for the Guards. "I'll go home. Somersets or nothing". I think he fought at Ypres. But my memories are of the Somme. he went over the top 3 times. Shot in the leg the last time, this saved his life. He was charging hundreds of yards ahead of colleagues. A bit mad by then. Ended the war as a medical orderly in the Himalyan foothills. But he was mentally scarred for life, as well as being gassed.
