Thomas's Story
The only brother of my three Great Aunts from St. Mawgan-in-Pydar Cornwall
This is my Great Uncle Tom who died in the 2nd Battle of the Somme in March/April 1918. Sadly he has never been identified but is mentioned on the memorial at St. Mawgan Church and also at Poitiers in France. His 3 sisters never recovered from their loss and kept a candle burning for him in the window of their house all their lives in the hope he would return. Like many women of their generation none of them ever married due to the shortage of young men after the war. Due to a quirk of family history I found out only after the last of my Great Aunts had died that they were even closer relatives than I thought, having had an even older brother (born out of wedlock a terrible shame at that time) who was my paternal Grandfather. Such a shame we can't talk about all these things while the people who remember are still with us.
