Charles's Story

Like millions of his generation Charles Beaumont Jones was just an ordinary working man. A reservist with the Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment, he was called up in late 1914.

In early 1915 Charles left for Belgium, in his last letter to his wife he said he was going to Hill 60 "where they were having it thick" and that she was not to worry about him. He asked her to kiss his children and to wait for news.

Charles was in the front line with 1100 men of his battalion on 8th May 1915 at a place called Frezenberg Ridge near Ypres when the Germans launched their offensive. On the following day just 67 men answered the roll call, Charles was not amongst them. Like so many he has no known grave.

We will remember him.
