James's Story
Only 14 at the outbreak of the war, James Gilhespy was a miner at Horden Colliery in Durham. Examined in May 1918 he lied about his age, saying he was 19 years 6 months old. He joined the 3rd Durham Light Infantry. In September 1918 he 'proceeded overseas with reinforcing draft to France North'. He served in France until February 1920, and was then discharged. He may have travelled into Germany to Cologne, as there is a postcard photo of him superimposed on a scene of Cologne.
