David's Story

After researching my family history and uncle David's death, I visited the Somme area and the Pozieres Memorial Cemetery where his name is displayed (he has no known grave) as well as the area where he was killed (Nr. Thennes, south of Amiens) on the 90th Anniversary of his death - 2nd April 1918. It was a very emotional time for me as I believe I may be the only relative to have visited there.

After seeing just a few of the battlefield cemeteries, I can only now appreciate the carnage of that war. Even at 72, I am not ashamed to admit to shedding many tears during my time there. Was it worth it?
