Albert's Story
Private Albert Illingworth
My father Albert Illingworth, enlisted in 1917, aged 18 and was posted to the South Staffordshire Regiment. In April 1918 together with men from the Cheshire Regt, they were part of the Front Line defending the Luddendorf advance towards the Channel Ports at the Lys Salient on the Armentieres to Ypres road, near to Ploogsteart "Plugstreet" Wood. Over-run the Unit suffered a number of fatalities, including the Lieutenant i/c and my father and others were captured by the German advance. They were marched down the Menin Road to Hallouin (Belgium) and remained there till the Armistice when they were marched to the Dutch Border by the German guards and left there. It was notuntil my father returned home that he learned his elder brother Arthur had been killed at Bethune on 27 June 1918.
