Guilford Lynsey Furguson's Story
My Grandfather died the 9th of October 1918, 1 month and 2 days before the end of the Great War. he left behind a wife and 2 children under 5 the eldest was my mother.
Lions led by donkeys
He started off as a member of the coastal defence battery at Tynemouth castle, but when Kitchener asked for more men for the front he volenteered to go. He was sent to the 9th battilon the Kings Own Yorkshire Light infantry.
When I was a child I often asked my mother to tell me about him but as she was only 3 when he was killed she had little information about him, it was not until 1992 that I discovered hsi army details and found out where he was buried.
His grave is in a small cemertry in the french village of Gouzencourt along with 1014 other great War dead.
1n 1994 I made a trip to France and to the cemertry it was a very moving experience.
As the 90th anniversary of the end of "The War to Stop all Wars" approaches, I cannot help thinking that if the average solider/sailor /airman was asked by goverments if the country should go to war I Know what the answear would be "YOU GO! and we will stay at home ".
Along with millions of childen and grandchildren I never got to see my Grandfather or Father, and as an former serviceman with 27 years service and having seen action both within the UK and abroad, I am proud to remember the fallen and injured of all conflicts all year round and not just on the 11th of November.
