Phillip Messenger's Story
Phillip was initially in the reserves based in the UK and was called to the front in December 1914, he was 29 years old. He became part of the 1st Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment. On the 13th of March a shell hit a group of men in the Yorkshire Regiment - my great grandfather was one of them. Two died instantly and my grandfather was injured. He died of his wounds on the 15th of March 1915 at the clearing station at Bailluel in France - he is now buried there.
His brother John Turner Marshall died in 1916 and is buried in Hebburn cemetry, both brothers are remembered on a memorial in the local church in Hebburn.
In addition to the above - he was stationed at Armentieres in France when the shell hit the billets he was in with others in his battalion.
