Soldier Record

Robert Sharpling (my Great grandfather) was an Officer (unknown ranking) in the King's Royal Horse Artillery. He served throughout the majority of the First World War. At one point he was captured by a German Raiding party and was interrogated. When he refused to talk he was stabbed with a Bayonet in the side by the German Officer. When a British Raiding party attacked the trench the NCO asked who stabbed him and shot the officer responsible. Near the end of the war he was hit by a piece of shrapnel which embedded itself too far into his chest to be removed. He lived until sometime during the 1970's when the shrapnel moved and pierced his lungs. This proved fatal.
