My grandfather died on July 9th 1916 killed at the Somme.

He was 37 and the father of 12 children.

When the telegram boy arrived with news of his death his wife my grandmother rolled around on the kitchen floor is despair. Worse was to follow when in the telegram it asked for 10 shillings for the blanket he was buried in. My gran although the mother of tweleve children went on to remarry and on September 27th 1918 she gave birth to a daughter who is still alive today aged 90.
