William's Story

Lost in France.

Born 2 July 1895 in Bourton on the Water, Gloucestershire. His parents were William and Eliza Stratford. Before he joined the army he was an Agricultural Labourer. He joined the 14th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment where his service number was 16999. He was serving in "B" Company on the Somme, France when he was killed in action aged 21 on 13 September 1916. His body was either never found or not identified and so he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier, Near Albert, France. He is listed on Face 9 A, 9 B and 10 B. He is also on the War Memorial in Bourton on the Water. William was awarded the British Medal and the Victory Medal. It is not sure but unlikely they were ever actually issued.

William was my 1st cousin 2x removed on my mum's line.
