George's Story
My grandfather was invalided out of the army in 1918 after having lost a leg in September 1918. He had served almost four years continuallly only to be wounded in the last months of the war. He had been a regular soldier serving in India and South Africa and latterly in the Territorial Army. I never knew him as he died in December 1947. One story passed on was that he would never buy a poppy as he hated Earl Haig whose name was attached to the poppy appeal. His medals went missing from his daughters home and with regret I have to say that they have never been found.
