Alfred Thomas's Story
Alfred Thomas Bassett was a son of John Bassett (1865-1903) and his wife, Mary Andrews (1858-1929).
A newspaper cutting (probably from the Kent Messenger, August 1917) details his career:
Mrs J. Bassett, Brickworks Cottages, Pluckley, has received news that her son, Private A. T. Bassett, Royal Sussex Regiment, formerly of the 5th Buffs, died in hospital at Etaples on August 7th through wounds received in action. Private Bassett, who was twenty-eight years of age, joined the Territorials on their formation nine years ago and proceeded to India with the Buffs on the outbreak of hostilities. Returning home in 1916 he was drafted to France and attached to the Royal Sussex. Much sympathy is accorded to Mrs. Bassett, who has four more sons serving - three in France and one in India.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records show:
A T Bassett, Private 260093, 9th Bn., Royal Sussex Regiment, died on Tuesday 7th August 1917, age 27; son of Mr. J. and Mrs. M. Bassett, of Brickfield Cottages, Pluckley, nr. Ashford, Kent. Cemetery: Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

His service number is also shown as TF/260093. He was my great grandmother's brother. My mother has no recollection of his name ever being mentioned in family discussions.
