Alexander's Story
He was gassed at the first battle of Loos, Ypres when gas was used for the first timeand the troops had no gasmasks. He was treated in Aberdeen and had 17 operations on both eyes but was registered as a blind person. In WW2 he joined up and was injured at Tobruk and the doctor examining him asked about the eyes, he was immediately sent home as he should not have been allowed back in the army.
