Lawrence William's Story
In Remembrance of Lawrence William Croager, Second Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion the Essex Regiment, killed on the 3rd May 1917, at the Battle of Arras, leading an attack on German positions. His body was never found and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial, along with 34,717 other men who have no known graves.
Lawrence began the war as a Sergeant in the 16th Battalion, (Queen's Westminster Rifles), The London Regiment. He was the oldest brother of Bernard Croager, also of the 16th Battalion, The London Regiment, who was killed on New Year's Day, 1916, has the Battalion, was coming out of the trenches; he was the only casualty of the day.
