James (Joe)'s Story

He enlisted at Chippenham on 11 Oct 1909.

He was my Great Grandad and he died before I was born

Was in the Army Reserve in 1914 & called up on outbreak of WW1and went to France with BEF within a few weeks as a sapper (engineer): therefore was one of the 'Old Contemptibles'.

Later joined the signals corps. Served in Royal Engineers (No. 19394). Only had 2 periods of leave in 4 years and survived with only minor wounds, including the loss of one toe.

Was mentioned in Dispatches by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig on 7 Nov 1917.

Discharged on 10 Oct 1921 from Sec B, Army Reserve, R.E. at Chatham.

Served 8 years and 57 days with the Colours, and 3 years and 308 days in the reserve.

Served in the Home Guard in WW2.
