William's Story
My great grandad enlisted in 1914 into the Northumberland Fusiliers when he was 34 and went to France leaving a wife and three sons. He fought in the Tyneside Scottish and Tyneside Irish battalions until October 1918 when he was transferred to the reserves after being wounded for the second time. We know he made the rank of lance corporal but was a private when he was transferred to the reserves. He was awarded the military medal in December 1916 for his part in a trench raid and capture of a German prisoner.
Send for Carr and give him a tot of rum
He was a very brave man. His commanding officer would say "Send for Carr and give him a tot of rum". He would then go over the top into no mans land to bring back wounded comrades. The whole family is very proud of his courageous actions. When he left the army he and his wife went on to have s daughter.
