Horace's Story
Very little is known about my grandad's role in the First World War, he only spoke about it very rarely.
He ran away from home when he was just sixteen to join the army, only for his mother to go to the barracks where he had enlisted and bring him home.
He rejoined 30 August 1916 and did most of his training at Hartlepool. He served at the Somme and at Ypres (where he was wounded in the left arm, with shrapnel. He was discharged from the army on1st March 1919. At the age of twenty.
He was a Private in 1/5 batallion West Yorkshire regiment. Number 54843. He was awarded the Victory medal and the British war medal.
