Edwin Frank's Story
1914 Joined York & Lancs Regt.
Like many tank commanders he dismounted to lead the tanks forward on foot
1915 fought at Gallipoli, - Chocolate Hill, the regiment lost all but one of its officers and most NCO's, promoted to Sergeant. 1916 Batalion sent to France after refitting. arrived on the Somme June 1916. 1st July 1916 Over the top on the Somme. Volunteered for The Machine Gun Corps (the 'suicide club') 10th Coy, 5th Division. Voluntered for 'Heavy Section' HSMGC operated the first tanks. promoted to acting Lt. 27th July 1917 The tank Corps was formed and Edwin Sherwood was commisioned into the Tank Corps as a Lieutenant.
31st July Passchendaele, Commanded tank D42 in action near Poelcapelle. The tanks led the infantry froward crushing the wire and giving cover from the machine guns of the hun but vision inside was poor and like many tank commanders he dismounted to lead the tanks forward on foot.
1918 Amiens, tanks broke the Hindenburg line, sent his last letter from the front on 10th August from a german bunker, again leading his tank forward on foot and it was hit by artillery, he lay in no mans land for 3 days crawling into a disused German bunker until discovered by a bombing party. Severely wounded he was nursed back to health by his fiance Maggie buxton whose travel to the hospital in France his commander had arranged.
