Ernest's Story
My paternal grandfather, Corporal Robinson was born in Widnes and joined the army at Ladysmith Barracks, Warrington in 1904. He served with the 2nd South Lancs for four years before leaving to be married in 1908. He was immediately recalled to the colours on the outbreak of war and killed only weeks later on September 16 during the Battle of the Aisne, near the village of Pacy. He is buried in the nearby Vendresse British War Cemetery. He left three young children, including my father whom he never saw as he was born in early 1915.
He was among the first "Old Contemptibles" killed at the very start of the war
