James Percival's Story

Menin Gate memorial: Lance Corporal James Percival Simpson, No 18310, 10th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regt.).

James Percival Simpson was a lace designer. His army training was at Aldershot & Lulworth Cove. We have letters he wrote to his brothers encouraging to join up. Made Lance Corporal and returned to war at the Somme; killed, 14 Feb 1916 in "The Movements of the Bluff, Ypres (before Battle of the Somme). Body not found." The famliy took a lot of effort to get confirmation of his death (we have letters). His will left everything to his fiancee Elsie Smith. His family were involved in the creation of Crich Stand, the memorial to the Sherwood Foresters and we have photos of its construction.
