Walter's Story
My mother Beatrice Fencott ne Johnson was born on 02/12/1914. She never knew her father Walter Johnson of the Worcestershire regiment.
On hearing that his wife Martha was expecting a baby he deserted and came back to his home in Birmingham. Following feelings of guilt he re enlisted as Walter Jackson again in the Worcestershire Regiment where he was later killed in action.
My mother as achild was given a copy of the Birmingham Hall of Rememberance book (which I have) which lists both names Walter Johnson and Walter Jackson of the Worcestershire Regiment.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists Corporal Walter Jackson 8352 4th Bn Worcestershire Regiment as having died on 19/06/1915. Remembered with honour at the Helles Memorial. I am guessing but from my investigations of the War Graves Commission and the Worcestershire Regiment web site; Private W Johnson 14792 9th Bn Worcestershire Regiment is listed as having died on 27/08/1918 and remembered with honour at the Teheran war cemetry.
I wonder what really happened.
