The following is an extract from the war diary for his battalion on the day he died.
War Diary of the 11th Northumberland Fusiliers.
20th Sept 1917
By 3:30 a.m. the battalion was in position on the taped line in front of Dumbarton Lakes. The assembly was carried out without a hitch or a casualty at 5:40 a.m. the barrage opened and the battalion, with A and C companies in the firing line. The opposition met with was very heavy at first from machine-gun fire especially from J20.a.1.1 where an enemy machine gun post held out for a considerable period, causing many casualties. After heavy hand-to-hand fighting A and C companies reinforced by B. company reached their objectives and dug in. D. company carried up materials for consolidation and the line was held and consolidated for the 10th Northumberland Fusiliers to pass through to their attack to the BLUE LINE. Many of the enemy were killed and many taken prisoner also one machine gun was captured by C. company.
