Albert Clifford's Story

Albert Clifford Swallow came from Rotherham, he was born in 1894 and was the only son of Eligah and Susannah Swallow.

He was killed in action on 23 Sept 1916 aged only 22 at Somme, France. HeÂ’s buried Blighty Valley Cemetery, France

His sister Lily born 15 Aug 1897 then became their only child. Lily Swallow married Walter Willoughby on 2 Oct 1916 just 9 days after her brother's death. We don't know if they had heard the news before they married.

Lily named her first son after her brother, he is Clifford Willoughby born Rotherham 10 June 1920.

Clifford Willoughby, my husband Christopher's uncle, went on to serve in the RAF as a flight crew navigator during WWII. He is in his late eighties and it is he who gave us the photo of his uncle Albert Clifford Swallow so that we could pass it through the generations, knowing that his name will never be forgotten.

Albert Clifford Swallow was an only son sadly missed by his parents and sister Lily
