Francis G's Story

Francis was the son of John and Charlotte Harvey of Crook, County Durham. Like many other members of his family he patriotically volunteered at the beginning of the war and enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry in 1914. In October 1917 he was killed at Passchendaele. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cott Memorial in Ypres. Three uncles of Francis were also killed in the war, John Cross and James Benedict Harvey were killed on 1st July on the Somme and Michael Harvey, after being wounded on two occasiions, died from gas poisoning at the end of the war. His brother James survived the Somme, as he was wounded on a trench raid, just before the battle. After hospitalisation, he was sent back to France and wounded again and then finally discharged in October 1918.

Francis, along with three of his family, made the supreme sacrifice.
