Walter's Story

Walter Piper was my mother's uncle who was gassed in France - the family never forgot him

His picture hung in my grandparent's bedroom but disappeared when they died.

Walter was an able seaman in Drake Bn Unit. His died of wounds in 16th General Hospital Le Trèport (Gassed 12/3/18) and died 21 Mar 1918 and was buried at Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Trèport

His siblings/parents never got over his death and his memory has remained alive to this day through his nieces/nephews and now his gt nieces (me!) and possibly others. Walter did have a fiancee who went onto marry another local man. There is a story that his mother Emily Piper went to France to visit him before he died but I have not been able to verify this. I cannot imagine this would have been possible, but if it did wouldn't it have been amazing that his 62 year old mother would have been able to travel to wartorn France!
