Andrew's Story
Andrew Barnes was my Grand Father and I feel very privilaged to have known him. He served in both the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the Seaforth Highlanders. I believe he was transferred to the later after he was injured. His mother kept these notes in a birthday book.
10 Sep 1917: Andrew enlisted into Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
20 Dec 1917: Andrew went to Craigleith Hospital
7 Feb 1918: Andrew left Craigleith Hospital went to Hopetoun House
15 Mar 1918: Andrew came home for holiday went back 22nd
1Apr 1918: Andrew wired me to go to Redford Barracks on draft. I went and saw him. Andrew ready to go. Came down to Balfour St
3 Apr 1918: Andrew came down to Balfour St
4 Apr 1918: I saw Andrew off at Waverly St for abroad and came home
5 Apr 1918: Andrew arrived France late in evening
14 Apr 1918: Andrew in trenches
23 Apr 1918: AndrewÂs first letter arrived from France had been in the firing line two days
13 May 1918: Andrew posted missing not true
14 Aug 1918: Andrew home leave 14 days went back to Bangour
11 Oct 1918: Andrew wounded
23 Oct 1918: Andrew admitted to Craw Road
14 Nov 1918: I went to Paisley to see Andrew stayed in Glasgow
2 Jan 1919: Andrew came home 12 days leave
13 Jan 1919: Andrew went back to hospital
21 Feb 1919: Andrew left Craw Rd Hospital and went to Bangour
25 Mar 1919: Andrew wired me coming home for 6 days
31 Mar 1919: Andrew home leave six days went back to Bangour
31 May 1919: Andrew left Keir Military Hospital went back to Bangour
12 Jun 1919: Andrew went through operation
27 Aug 1919: Andrew left Bangour and went to Erskine House
28 Nov 1919: Andrew came home for good
My Grandfather lost his right leg in the war but this didn't stop him becoming a gardener and also driving a car without any conversions done. I am also led to believe that he could make his way round the dance floor. He was a quiet gentle man.
