Alan's Story
Alan and his elder brother Donald born 15 months earlier both died on the Somme just two months and two miles apart.
Alan was born on 8 May 1897, employed by the London County & Westminster Bank in Andover, joined the Volunteer Force in May 1915, rejected by the Inns of Court OTC on health grounds and immediately joined the Royal Fusileers becoming a corporal. Killed on the Somme at Flers on 18 September 1916 aged 19, after supporting the first tank attack on that village.
