John's Story
Engineman, 1152ES, HM Trawler "Achilles II" Royal Naval Reserve
Joined the Naval Reserve as a volunteer 16/11/14, serving in trawlers taken up from trade, converted to minesweepers. He served in HMT 'Lord Roberts' (Victory II), HMT Ganges and HMT Achilles II.
HMT Achilles II a 225 ton Hired trawler converted to minesweeping armed with a 6 pounder gun, built 1906.
Engineman Siddle was awarded a certificate of Hurt & Wounding issued 11/02/17 citation states 'Whilst on board HMT Lord Roberts(Ganges) been then actually upon his majesty's service in Patrol 26/10/16 this man sufferred Immersion by his ship being blown up. He was sober at the time and of good conduct."
In recognition of his services to Mine sweeping, 01/04 - 30/1217 he was awarded the Distinguised Service Medal.
Further awarded the Bronze Military Medal for Valour conferred by the King of Italy 16/03/17 following service sweeping the Otantro trench laying from the heel of italy to the Albanian coast.
Engineman Siddle was lost when Achilles II was struck by a mine off the Shipwash light in the North Sea 26/06/18.
He was 'Mentioned in Dispatches' posthumously 02/03/20
He was the husband of his late wife Emily and father to his two surviving sons Albert & Jack. A daughter had died in infancy along with her mother (possible victims of spanish flu)
