Gilbert's Story
Gilbert joined up in early 1916 adding two years to his true age. He was commissioned on 23rd July 1916 into the Duke of Wellington's West riding Regiment. The next year he transferred to the Royal Flying corps as an Artillery Observer.
Other memories
This picture of soldiers digging a hole was among Gilbert's stuff when we were clearing his house subsequent to his death in 1983. It had no caption but when one examines it and sees that all but three are very young

In the picture "Practice trench digging?" Gilbert is standing fourth from the left holding the pick-axe. I really would like to know what is the implement which the man to the left of the seated man is holding!
