Samuel's Story
Samuel was my wife's Grandad
Another for my Grandad:
I knew, one day, that I would go
To France, where my Grandad, fought the foe
Not only him, but thousands more
Went out to fight, a bloody war
It upsets me inside, when I sit and think
When the order was "Over the brink"
Slipping and sliding, blinded by dust
No changing minds, you knew you must
Then respite maybe, just for a while
Feeling bad and tasting bile
In filthy trenches, you were stuck
Reeking of the stinking muck
I don't know why, this Grandad of mine
Occupies a lot af my time
I never knew him, have no memories
But I love him dearly
And know that he sees
I'm so proud of this man
Who went to stand
Now buried in a foreign land
I went to his side, and left him a rose
With my love and respect
And I'm sure, he knows
Mavis Brady
