Herbert's Story
Army Driver who drove the horse drawn amunition waggons to the front lines. Volunteered in April 1915.
My grandfather was wounded in France in july 1918. The saw action in the Balkans, Egypt, and Greece as well as France.
For seven hundred years from the time of the Crusades Jerusalem remained in the hands of the Moors until it was liberated by British Forces in 1917. Grandad sent my Dad and Auntie a cross from Jerusalem.
All his life my Grandfather kept photographs on his china cabinet of his brother Sidney and a photo of Sidney's grave at Salonica in Greece. As a child I found this rather macabre. Now I am older I realise my grandfather could never go back there to Greece to visit is brother's grave ever. He could never afford to.
Like millions of others at that time who brothers, husbands, sons and daughters lie in war graves all over the world.

This is the inscription on Sidney's war grave at Salonica.
