Cecil's Story
Cecil Wincote was my great great uncle who joined the Royal Warwickshire regiment in 1916. In late 1917 he and other members of his regiment joined 16th Battalion Machine Gun Corps. On 21st march 1918 Cecil's forward position with the 16th (Irish) Division came under sustained attack from the German Spring offensive. Cecil was recorded as missing in action. His body was never found and his is commemorated on the Pozieres memorial.
His loss so badly effected his parents that they would never accept his loss and refused to let his details be added to any local war memorials. To this day Cecil's name is only to be found on the Pozieres memorial and we simply have a document from the war office confirming he had been killed in action. However we visit the excellent National Memorial Arboreteum near his home and will be placing a poppy cross to his memory.
