John Henry's Story

John Henry Barwick was the first husband of my Grandmother Rose Knill. He was born in Ilfracombe in 1891 and married my grandmother, who came from Barnstaple, in 1913. They had three children Bertie John (Uncle Bert) who in WW2 served in the Chindits and then emigrated to New Zealand in the 50s, Leslie Herbert (Uncle Les) who served in the Royal Engineers and returned to Barnstaple and Ivy Peace Barwick who worked during WW2 in the Woolacombe Munitions factory and lived all her life in Ilfracmbe.

John Barwick 'answered the call' and joined the 8th Batt. of the Devonshire Regiment on 6th November 1914

Private Barwick died ('Death regarded') on 26th October 1917 at the battle of Passchaendale and he is commemmorated at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Belgium.
