Sidney's Story
Joined army 1910. Served in the trenches. At battle of Loos 1915 when gas was first used. One of few survivors of battle of Neuve Chapelle. Wounded twice. Treated at Milton Hill Section Hospital. March to June 1918 served at Irish Command Depot. His diary for 1918 records the progress of the war. He left Tipperary 10th. June for Dovercourt. At Dovercourt when Armistace was announced. From 20th. November German submarines, having surrenderd to Admiral Beatty, came into Harwich. By end of November there were 128 U Boats at Harwich. Awarded War Badge for services rendered in H.M.'s Military Force since 4th. August 1914. Discharged 25 March 1919. Character described as Exemplary. Because of wounds unable to return to Bookbinding, Given job cleaning Railway Carriages. Died 29 May 1971 having worked in allotment the previous day for about 5 hours.
