James's Story

James Murphy was my dad, who suffered a severe shell wound to his right leg, which led to an amputation above the knee before his 19th birthday. He worked as an Engineer's Storekeeper in the Grangemouth Dockyard Company until ill health required him to leave during World War 2.

My father James and his brother John, both amputees, shared a pair of slippers each Christmas for a number of years. My dad's shell wound took place around August 1918 at the Somme. Johnnie's wounding records unknown.
