Frederick's Story

Fred Hanna was out repairing broken telephone wires with Cpl John Pender on 31st July 1917 (first day of the Third Battle of Ypres) John was sniped in the shoulder and fell. Fred ran over to help his mate and was shot dead by the same sniper. John lay under Fred's body until dark at which time he made his way back to base. When Fred's body was searched for later it couldn't be found, presumably buried in the Flanders mud. His name is on the Menin Gate, Ypres.
