John's Story

Johnny, as he was affectionately known by his family, was a real hero. He inspired his fellow soldiers, was honest and true in all he did, he shared of his possessions to help others, and gave his life in the defence of freedom and liberty for the Belgian people and the people of Europe. He is my Grans twin brother and she missed him dearly throughout her life, He was an inspiration to his younger brother Tommy who tried to join up when only 14 years old just so he could be with Johnny. His Father Luke Clarke had served valiantly as a Sergeant in the British Army before him and a tradition of proud Military valour was strongly evident in the home in Kilmalogue.
